It didn’t take much for six of us at Speak! to ditch the office and take part in this year’s Portland Creative Conference. What a treat. And what a payoff. Like last year, we were quickly humbled by listening to one brilliant mind after the next.
The lineup of the Sept. 23 event pulled on two timeless threads: Equality and Vulnerability. Several speakers brought awareness to racial and gender inequalities, while weaving in personal perspective about their fears, insecurities and struggles. Our toughest experiences have a way of generating a powerful force of meaningful expression.
The greatest takeaway? Creativity and vulnerability go hand-in-hand; you can’t have one without the other. And, of course, these great quotes to have and to hold:
“Write down your fears so that they don’t sneak up on you.”
Comedic actress, playwright and author
HBO’s Looking, The Daily Show
“Art is about being creatively maladjusted”
Kevin Willmott (Referencing MLK)
Screenwriter, filmmaker, playwright, actor, professor, activist
“Unbecome who you’re not”
Film and TV screenwriter/Producer
Leverage, The Librarians
“Diversity isn’t just skin color, it’s perspective and experience”
Brian Michael Bendis
Marvel’s Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy
